By the summer of 2013\, Detroit was flat broke with one t ruly sizable asset: a collection of masterpieces held by the Detroit Insti tute of Arts. To cover the city's debts\, creditors wanted to put the coll ection on the auction block. Pundits around the world were writing Detroit &rsquo\;s obituary\, and liquidating the art threatened to become the fina l exclamation point.
